Borders Drawn in Blood
Verona is a city Led by 48 different Ruling families loosely connected under the rule of the Scaligeri Family. The current patriarch of the Scaligeri family is Can Francesco Della Scala. Or, as he was affectionately known from an early age, Can Grande Della Scala.
Verona is a walled city known for its 48 towers (corresponding to the 48 different ruling families). Many families are in an unofficial state of war with one or more of their peers. As such some patriarchs are virtual prisoners in their own towers for fear of assassination if they leave. There can even be seen small wooden footbridges connecting the tops of neighboring towers of allied families. These serve as last resort paths of escape should they come under attack.
There is a well established castle close to the city center, that serves as the city’s defense as well as the primary residence of the Scaligeri family. In centuries past the Romans had built a large arena and re-planned the city around it. This ancient, elliptically shaped arena is still in good repair and functions as a venue for military training and as soldier’s barracks (for those loyal to Can Grande).
